Chapter 9

I soared over the newly renovated aqueduct system along the river that fed Hatra and followed the strange presence that made my blood run cold. Around me, the temperature in the air plummeted as well, and a chill settled in my mighty bones.

The presence lurked just ahead and shifted with the air currents as it taunted me. It smelled vaguely of fresh blood and rotting flesh tinged with the acrid scent of brimstone and ash.

With my powerful wings, I made quick work of crossing the distance, and I landed near the entrance of the Crimson Canyon. I narrowed my eyes at the entrance of the canyon and made a mental note to keep an ear out for the red dragon.

This was only a scouting mission, I didn’t want to fight with anyone, and I definitely did not have the time to spare for it. I was just out here following a hunch in order to prove it wrong. Hopefully, I’d find nothing and head back to Hatra. Once there, I’d crawl back into Laika’s bed, bury my face into her breasts, and fall asleep until morning. Once the two of us woke up, I planned to bury my cock deep within her tight pussy for a second and third round.

That was my plan, and I didn’t want anything to deviate from it.

The vaguely familiar corruptive presence didn’t continue on into the canyon but stopped right outside of it. I followed the strange presence to a rock wall right outside of the Crimson Dragon’s territory. I couldn’t see anything wrong at first, but then I noticed the sand close to the rock face seemed mottled, almost as if it had been bruised somehow. Black and purple spots tinged the golden sand and made it seem as if the area was rotting away.

Just as I flew closer to it, Asher’s panicked voice echoed in my mind.

Get away! Get away from that! Don’t get any closer! Fly, fly now, as far away as you can!

“What’s wrong, Asher?” I spoke aloud and hoped the man would be able to hear me inside of my spiritual sea. “What is it? Why are you so afraid of a rock face?”

Suddenly, the air in front of the rock shifted, like how an airport tarmac would distort from the heat of an airplane while you were looking at it. Hatred emanated from where the rock face shimmered, and I heard the cracking of stone.

Darkness and death! A portal to the netherworld ruled by the demon kings! Demons, demons will come through that rift and lay waste to everything you have ever known and loved.

Memories that weren’t mine bombarded my mind, and I faltered in my flight as the images flickered behind my eyes.

I saw a small village in the mountains, full of stone houses with mossy roofs, burn in the night as lightning struck all around it. The lightning fell in crimson strikes, and everywhere it fell, the land shattered and rotted away as if it was a putrid disease.
